MOSCOW LAIMA 'I was going down to the stage when the Roissia’s 3,000 room hotel shook; a man had tried to assassinate Yeltsin at the gates of the Kremlin. The smell of cordite wafted in..’ JP I like huge spaces and the Roissia auditorium next to the Kremlin was vast. The ruble, and my budget, had crashed and burned upon arrival, but all was OK, until the star told me she wanted more sets that were not in the contract. It was down to my sketches on napkins that Oleg the Production Manager rushed off to a derelict warehouse on Moscow's frozen outskirts, where hungry Russian crews welded my ideas into steel. Laima brought me on stage and thanked me in front of Russia's entertainment crème. Moscow TV interviewed me, beamed me around the ex-soviet union. Flying back to London the British Airways captain gave us champagne. The show toured Russia and the Russian press dubbed it ‘Best Foreign Concert Design’. JP
